Mary Kasch, OTR/L, CHT, FAOTA (February 15, 1947 - May 21, 2012) was a founding member and president of the American Society of Hand Therapists (ASHT), president and executive director of the Hand Therapy Certification Commission (HTCC) and a staunch supporter of the fundraising efforts of the American Hand Therapy Foundation (AHTF). Mary's exemplary career reflects the highest standards known in our profession. She was an outstanding therapist, role model, visionary leader, and dear friend to many. She helped chart the course for hand therapy that we all enjoy today.

Journal of Hand Therapy Tribute

Mary wanted a well-deserving occupational therapist or physical therapist to receive a financial scholarship to assist in the process of becoming a certified hand therapist. This award has been proudly established by the Tri-Alliance of ASHT, HTCC and AHTF to honor her request and recognize her contributions.

Purpose of Award

To provide opportunities for professional development by providing financial support to an occupational therapist or physical therapist interested in pursuing certification in hand therapy.

Funding

The scholarship amount will be a total value equivalent to $1,500. The award candidate must meet HTCC's general examination eligibility requirements or be eligible to meet the certification requirements by the time the examination registration is due. The candidate must plan on taking the examination within 18 months of receiving the award.

Tri-Alliance Contributions
  • ASHT will offer one or more of its many continuing education offerings for this scholarship. The ASHT contribution will include registration fees only, not exceeding $500 combined. (ASHT Continuing Education - $500 value)
  • HTCC will offer the CHT examination fee. ($500 value)
  • AHTF will contribute $500.
    • The award recipient may use the remaining amount, after ASHT and HTCC’s contributions, to purchase study materials, attend courses and to be reimbursed for travel related expenses for the examination or continuing education courses. The award recipient will submit receipts to AHTF for reimbursement.

The application period for this award is from January through February each year.

Selection Process

A committee of Tri-Alliance members uses an objective scoring system to determine the recipient of the award. The award recipient will be notified June 1st and will be announced to the general public at the ASHT Annual meeting in the fall.
